A copy of A.J. Wright's Minnesota funeral license hangs in the historical photo gallery in our lobby. His license number is 23, meaning that he was the twenty third person in the state of Minnesota to become licensed as a funeral director. He and a partner, O.C. Beck, founded Beck & Wright, a furniture and funeral business located on Front street at 7th in 1881, the same year Moorhead became incorporated as a city (it was established as a village in 1875). With a south facing store, A.J. sewed some awnings for the front of his establishment. His neighbors all needed awnings also and so A.J. was able to supply them. This furniture and funeral business soon incorporated a thriving canvas awning business. Old pictures of downtown Moorhead show many examples of his work. A.J. bought the interest of O.C. Beck in 1910 and moved the business to 108-112 5th Street South, a location now occupied by Sportland. A.J. contributed much to the growth of Moorhead's early years, he and several friends founded Trinity Lutheran Church in 1882 and A. J. served as the first treasurer for Concordia College. A. J. died in 1931, fifty years after founding the business. At that time and his sons Walter and Edgar assumed the business.
