Alfred Gilbert Brothers

Alfred Al Gilbert Brothers was born on August 10, 1920, to Selma and Fletcher Brothers of Menomonie, Wisconsin. Al and his siblings, Donald, John and Evelyn were raised in Menomonie. After graduating from Menomonie High School, Al moved to Fargo, ND where he worked for Twin City Fruit Co. In Fargo, Al met, fell in love with and, in 1943, married Evelyn Ericksen at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. Within days after their marriage, Al was deployed to Europe as part of America’s effort in World War II. While he was overseas, Evelyn received her nurses training at the St. Luke’s School of Nursing. Upon his return they settled in Fargo and started their family. They had two sons, Richard of Fargo and James of Oxbow, ND and Mesa, AZ.
Al worked for the federal government for his entire career. First as an Adjudication Officer for the Veterans Administration. He then served as the Purchasing Officer for the Metabolism and Radiation Research Center in Fargo now known as the Bioscience Laboratory, a division of the Department of Agriculture, and finally as the Administrative Officer for the Metabolism and Radiation Research Center, a position he held until he retired in 1975. Upon his retirement he and Evy built a home on Little Detroit Lake and resided there until Evy’s health required a move back to Fargo. After Evy’s passing in 1996 he remained in Fargo until 2002 when he became reacquainted with his very special friend Jerene Price of Menomonie, Wisconsin. In 2003 he moved to Menomonie and resided there with Jerene until Jan. 2014 when illness forced him to move to the Neighbors of Dunn County Nursing Home in Menomonie. In 2015 he moved to River Pointe of Moorhead where he resided until his death.
He is survived by his sons, Richard, Fargo, and James, Oxbow, ND and Mesa, AZ; two grandchildren, Jamie, Fargo and Kristi Perry Week, Mesa, AZ; three great-grandchildren, Tanner, Tyler and Trenton Week, Mesa, AZ; and his very special friend, Jerene Price of Menomonie, WI. He is also survived by his brother, John, Grand Forks, ND and his sister-in-law, Arlene Brothers, Eden Prairie, MN.
