Bernard “Barney” Dickhaus

Barney Bernard Dickhaus, 83, Moorhead, MN, died on Saturday, June 20, 2015, in Sanford Health Palliative Care, Fargo, ND.
Barney was born on August 8, 1931 to Amelia Perrault and Bernard Dickhaus of Moorhead, MN. He grew up in the Moorhead and Comstock area and attended St. Joseph’s, Comstock and Moorhead High Schools.
He joined the 178th National Guard in 1948 and was activated in 1951. He served in the Air Force in Valdosta, Georgia and San Bernardino, California. Upon discharge he returned to Moorhead in 1953.
Barney met his wife, Laura Allen at Bud’s Roller Rink in Moorhead. They were married on May 31, 1952. They raised their five children in Comstock and Moorhead. From 1954 until 1966 he farmed at Comstock. The family moved to Moorhead in 1966 when he became a self-employed bulk hauler. He enjoyed the company of his dairy farmers and transported their raw milk from their dairy farms to Cass Clay Creamery. He continued with his milk routes until his first retirement in 1995. He then worked part-time at Horvick’s and Bert’s Trucking, until his second and final retirement in July of 2011.
Barney enjoyed stock car and World of Outlaw races. He owned and was the mechanic of a stock car. On special occasions there was a Mechanic’s Feature which allowed him to drive his own stock car.
He was an avid bowler in the F-M Community. He was a member of the Elks, Eagles and American Legion for 52 years. He was a member of The Lutheran Church of Christ The King since 1966.
Barney and Laura found great happiness with family and friends at their home and lake cabin. Barney always participated in the 4th of July with a bang. He enjoyed and provided years of Fireworks and the “Grand Finale”!
Barney is survived by his wife Laura of 63 years; his children, Randy Renee Dickhaus of Hawley, MN, Reneece Doug Norgaard, Pam Stuart Thomas, Jody Tim Coste, all of Moorhead, MN, Shelly John Blanchard, Fargo, ND; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sister Diane Dave Nattress, Shevlin, MN; brother Duane Dickhaus, Worland, WY; sisters-in-law, Lois Hanson and Maxine Allen; brother-in-law, Bob Allen, all of Moorhead, MN; cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Memorial Gathering: Tuesday, June 30, 2015, from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. in the Lutheran Church of Christ the King.
Memorial Service: Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at 7:00 P.M. in the Lutheran Church of Christ the King.
