Dorothy Powers

Dorothy Mae Gunderson Powers, age 83 died peacefully at home surrounded by family on September 2nd, 2013.

Dorothy was born on August 22, 1930 to Bernard and Ragna Larson Gunderson. She grew up in the rural Kragnes and Georgetown area. She graduated from Moorhead High School in 1948. Dorothy went on to graduate from Moorhead State Teacher’s College. Dorothy began her teaching career in Glyndon, MN and then later went to teach at McKinley School in Fargo, ND. She enjoyed teaching and cherished the memories of her students. She was a member of Beta Chi sorority while in college and continued to meet with them monthly and also was a member of a birthday club. In 1965 she married James Trapper Powers. Dorothy supported the Fargo Retired Teachers by keeping a scrapbook of their activities. Dorothy was a lifelong active member of North Buffalo Lutheran Church and served in all areas. Dorothy was a consummate volunteer who lived her faith by serving others. Her love of music led to her singing solos and performing with the FM Sweet Adelines. Although Dorothy was half Norwegian and half Swedish she was most proud of her Swedish heritage. Some other enjoyable hobbies were enjoying her flowers, gardening and bird watching. She dearly loved her grandchildren and influenced them with her wisdom.
Dorothy is survived by her husband James and daughter Jane Mark Skunberg both of Moorhead as well as three grandchildren Erik, Anders and Annika Skunberg; two brothers-in-law, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dorothy was a very social person and loved people, either being out with them or entertaining them in her home. She will be missed.

Visitation: Thursday, September 5, 2013, from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 pm, in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.

Funeral: Friday, September 6, 2013, at 11 a.m., in North Buffalo Lutheran Church, near Kragnes, MN.

Interment: Riverside Cemetery, Moorhead, MN.
