Engel Bergseid

July 16, 1923 — June 22, 2011

Engel was born on July 16, 1923, at Rollag, MN, to Joseph and Ida Arntson Bergseid. He grew up and attended country school there and was baptized and confirmed in Rollag Lutheran Church. Engel served in the U.S. Marines, 5th Amtrac Battalion, Company C during WWII, serving on Tinian, Saipan, and Iwo Jima where he was injured and reported dead, later to be found alive on a hospital ship. He was awarded the Purple Heart, two presidential citations and a Navy unit citation. Upon his discharge, he went to Montana and helped care for the ranch that his uncles Iver and Otto owned. He was proud to become a blood brother to the Blackfoot Indians there. He came back to Rollag and farmed near there. From 1958 until 1982 he served as a Federal Crop Insurance Agent with his office in Moorhead, and then continued to farm and raise Angus cattle. Engel married Marion Wicker Moen on November 6th, 1979, at Rollag. He loved to travel, especially to go to Marine reunions. Engel and his brother, John, donated land next to Rollag Lutheran Church for the Bergseid Field of Dreams Baseball Field.He is survived by his wife, Marion, Rollag, MN; twin brother John Elva Bergseid, Fargo, ND, brothers, Tosten Angie Bergseid, Rollag, MN, George Von Bergseid, Moorhead, MN, and Sam Caroline Bergseid, Des Moines, IA; sisters, Esther Kronbeck, Fargo, ND, and Alice Vincent Floberg, Pelican Rapids, MN; step-son, Arne Margo Moen, Belleview, WA; step-daughter, Nora Moen, Mukilteo, WA; step-daughter-in-law, Ann Moen, Germany; seven step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward and Joseph; and a step-son, James Moen.
