Florence Singleton

July 6, 1927 — April 7, 2016

Devoted Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother and Sister, Florence Jean Singleton, 88, of Moorhead, MN, passed away April 7th, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born July 6, 1927, on a farm in Plumas, Manitoba, Canada, to parents Thomas and Maude Riley Madill who had just recently immigrated from Ireland. Florence and family persevered through many hardships in their early years. She often would recall the time she and her mother had to share an egg as that was all they had. Her mother passed away at age 46, Florence was just 16 at the time. She spent the next several years helping her father and older brother care for the younger siblings. She married Clayton Singleton on July 5th, 1950 in Moorhead, and they raised the three thousand dollars necessary to move to the U.S. that same year, settling in Moorhead. It was here that they found work and raised their four children.

Florence worked as a clerk at Kresge’s until her first child was born, then stayed home caring for and loving her family with complete devotion. When her children were grown she worked at Eventide cleaning and in the laundry and later moved to Eventide to be near her husband who required nursing home care. She made many dear friends there who she was always very grateful to have, with whom she was often seen walking the halls. She remained at Eventide until her passing.

Florence always found the positive in all those she knew and never allowed negative words to be said about or by those she so dearly loved. She reminded us all to find the good in everyone. She used any extra money she had on her children and grand-children since her greatest possession of all was her family and friends which she truly cherished above all else.

She is preceded in death by her husband Clayton, mother Maude Riley Madill, father Thomas Madill, brothers Mark, Billy, Jimmy, and sister Daisy, three sisters-in-law and her mother and father-in-law.

She is survived by her sons Calvin, Arnold, Rodney, daughter Sandra Douglas Marquart, grandchildren Sarah, Laura, and Kari Marquart, John, Mark and Beth Singleton, great-grandchildren Kaylee, Avery and Riley Singleton, brothers Tommy Beth and Bruce Madill, sisters Selene Jake Gunther, Carol Bob Blaydon and many nieces, nephews and good friends.
