Frances Flaig

Frances Flaig, 92, of Moorhead, MN, died Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, in Palliative Care at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.

Frances R. Flaig was born December 5, 1922, to Leslie and Clara Raff in rural Polk County, Minnesota. She attended Moorhead State Teachers College and began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Mayville, North Dakota. She married Elmer Flaig on August 22, 1946, in the First Congregational Church of Moorhead, where they were members for about 70 years. Frances and Elmer raised three children, Cynthia, Bruce and Linda. During these years Frances continued to contribute to her community in a teaching capacity as a Sunday school teacher and leader of daughter Cynthia’s Campfire Girls’ Blue Birds group. When the children reached junior high and high school age, she went back to Moorhead State to earn her four-year elementary education degree and taught in the Moorhead schools for another 22 years, until her retirement in 1987. During her career, Frances served as model teacher for many student teachers enrolled at Moorhead State. In 1985 she was honored to be selected as Moorhead’s Teacher of the Year. Frances loved “blue skies and sunshine,” reading, writing letters and, above all, her close-knit family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and sisters Mary Alice Gloria Raff and Inez Ortner.

She is survived by her children, their spouses Mary Fouassier Flaig and Brian Goodspeed, grandson Michael Crawford and sister Carol Pletan.
