Gilberto Castorena

July 22, 1953 — August 10, 2017

Gilberto Flores Castorena Jr., 64, of Moorhead, Minnesota, formerly of Eloy, Arizona and Twin Falls, Idaho died Thursday, August 10, 2017, at Sanford Health Medical Center, Fargo, North Dakota.

Gilberto Flores Castorena Jr. was born on July 22nd, 1953 in Moorhead, Minnesota to Gilberto and Maria Castorena. He lived in Arizona, Iowa, and Idaho most of his life, but always considered Minnesota his home. He was a farm laborer most of his life and took great pride in his work. He was especially proud of how straight he could plow a field row given that he had lost one of his eyes due to an accident as a child. He enjoyed all aspects of farm work from planting, to harvest, to transporting of product.

Gilberto loved to sing. He especially enjoyed singing classic country and oldies and enjoyed teaching songs to his younger family members. He was often called “Freddy Fender” or “Uncle Elvis” due to his love of their music. He loved to take long drives to a quiet river and go fishing and would often take his children, nieces, nephews, and any other children who wanted to go along. He taught his love of singing and fishing to several generations, which is probably why he was everyone’s favorite uncle.

He was fond of wearing snakeskin cowboy boots, wearing Old Spice, and using Tres Flores pomade. He took great pride in his appearance and enjoyed dressing up for any occasion. Gilberto was a very social person, he loved spending time with his family and friends. He could always be counted on to help any of his compadres with anything they needed, he would literally give someone the shirt off his back.

Gilberto will be loved and missed by his daughters Crystal Castorena, Alexandra Rodriguez, and Maude-Sol Castorena, as well as his large and extended family throughout the entire United States and Mexico.

At Gilberto’s request, no services will be held, and his cremated remains will be scattered at a later date. The family is grateful for the condolences, but declines flowers and donations.
