Helen Cahill

April 9, 1922 — December 11, 2014

Helen Kathryn Stoltman was born at home near Minto, North Dakota on April 9, 1922, the third child and eldest daughter of John A. and Dominica Roguszga Stoltman. Helen was baptized in the Roman Catholic Faith at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Warsaw, North Dakota. She was residing at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. She left this life and went to be with her God on Thursday, December 11, 2014.

In 1924 the Stoltman family moved to Minneapolis. Helen graduated from Roosevelt High School, Minneapolis, in 1940. She went to work as secretary, bookkeeper and office manager for the Uhl Co., a plumbing and heating contractor in downtown Minneapolis. She married James David Cahill on June 21, 1947 at the Church of St. Helena in Minneapolis. She continued to work at the Uhl Co. until the birth of her second child in 1950. She did not work outside the home thereafter, working tirelessly as a homemaker and mother of nine children.

Helen and Jim left Minneapolis in 1950 and lived briefly in Norwalk and Whittier, California, then in Junction City, Kansas before returning to Minnesota in 1952 when Jim went to work for State Farm Insurance Companies. They lived in Detroit Lakes for a year, Brainerd for three years, then went to Minneapolis in 1956 when Jim was promoted to the State Farm regional office in St. Paul.

In 1957 Jim left State Farm to practice law in Moorhead. Helen and the family soon joined him in Moorhead, where they remained.

Jim passed away in 1994.

Helen was a devoutly religious woman and was active in church groups at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Parish in Moorhead, including Guild, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and The Confraternity of Christian Mothers.

She enjoyed playing Scrabble, Yahtzee and Shanghai and visiting with her children and grandchildren. She was a very caring person, and was dearly loved and cherished by her children and grandchildren. She was witty and had many friends, most of whom she outlived.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, brothers John, Steven, Benedict and Joseph, sisters Maryan Williams and Lorraine Campbell. and her husband, Jim. She is survived by her nine children: Steven Jeri of Moorhead; Mary Douglas Johnson of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Kathleen Chapman Graham of Phoenix, Arizona; Martha Terrance Rocheford of Detroit Lakes; David Michele of Palm Springs, California; Brian of Juneau, Alaska; Robert Mary of Grand Rapids, Minnesota; Barton of Moorhead; and Matthew of Monmouth, Oregon, as well as seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 16 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 P.M. with a prayer service 7:00 P.M. at St. Francis de Sales Church in Moorhead. All are welcome.

Funeral Services and celebration of the Mass of Resurrection will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Moorhead on Wednesday, December 17 at 11:00 A.M.

Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.
