Helen Miller

Helen was born to Charles and Emma Anderson on January 2, 1923, in Fargo, ND. She lived in the Fargo-Moorhead area for most of her life. She lived in California briefly in the early 1940’s while married to Shannon’s father, who was serving his time for WWII.

Helen died March 22, 2016 from progression of congestive heart failure at 93 years young. Helen was baptized and confirmed at Elim Lutheran Church. She graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1941, the last midyear class. She participated in a round robin letter with classmates for nearly 70 years, until she was the sole remaining classmate. Helen attended business school and completed the first dental hygiene program offered by UND. She worked as a dental hygienist and later was a top notch stenographer in the insurance industry.

Helen married Arnold F. Miller on December 28, 1963 and enjoyed their life together, until Arnold died in 2005. They were lifetime members of the Moorhead Country Club. They were avid horse people, belonging to the Minnesota Quarter Horse Association for many years and enjoyed attending many horse shows to watch the horses they raised on the Quarter Tater Ranch in Moorhead, MN.

Helen was a longtime member of Pontoppidan Lutheran Church. She was recently honored for being a 50 year member of Eastern Star, having been a past Worthy Matron and holding many other stations.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Shannon Powell, of Roseville, MN; sister, Eileen Blume of Edmonds, WA; step-daughter Barbara Jerry Bohnenblust, Reno, NV; two step-granddaughters, Laura and Nancy and four step-great-grandchildren.

Helen lived a full and active life. She loved people, homemaking and entertaining. She had an optimistic, encouraging outlook as well as a remarkable memory for details of people’s lives. Before losing her vision to macular degeneration, she was an avid reader and bridge player. She was loved by and a role model to many.

Our family would like to express appreciation and gratitude to those individuals who assisted and supported Helen in many ways over the years, enabling her to live independently until the last few months. We will miss her greatly, yet feel great comfort in knowing she is at peace and free from medical constraints. We look forward to you joining us for a celebration of Helen’s life on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. with a viewing an hour before at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND, with coffee to follow at the church.
