Irma Gidmark

February 28, 1912 — March 2, 2011

Irma Gidmark, Moorhead, Minnesota, rejoiced beautifully in eternity on March 2, two days after 99th birthday, at home with her children and a grandson.Irma was born in 1912 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the second child of Henry and Emilie Witte, devout Christians devoted to their family. She graduated in 1929 from St. Cloud Tech High School and eventually from St. Cloud State Teacher's College, interrupting her studies briefly to teach first in a one-room country schoolhouse in Atwater, Minnesota, and then in Jasper and Tracy, Minnesota. In 1938, Irma married choral conductor Laurence Gidmark, with whom she shared the love of five dear children – daughter Jocelyn Moorhead, daughter Ranata Niederloh; Portland, OR son John Minneapolis, MN, daughter Laural Fisher; Glen Ellyn, IL, and daughter Dawn Irwin; Furlong, PA. Irma returned to teaching in 1961, commencing a long and soulful career of nurturing the minds and characters of third and fifth graders at George Washington Elementary in the Moorhead school system, always managing to balance remarkably her parenting and professional work with the tireless application of a servant's heart – singing in various church choirs and the community opera, ordering cakes for celebrations at Trinity Lutheran Church, going to nursing homes to wash the hair of women ten years younger than she, ministering as a trained Stephen Minister to people in emotional and physical travail, generously praying always for anyone in need. For the fast fifty-five years, much of Irma's treasured vacation has been spent at the beloved family cabin on Big Cormorant Lake, where family experience has grown mythic. In addition to her daughters and son, Irma leaves three admiring sons-in-law David Niederloh, Dennis Fisher, and Bill Irwin and eight adoring grandchildren – Jennifer Niederloh and Angela Niederloh Hayward, Benjamin and Nicholas Gidmark, Bryn and Lark Irwin, and Paul and David Fisher. Her life has been a constant hymn.Irma's service of new life will be at Trinity Lutheran Church on Monday, March 7, at two o'clock. Visitation will precede the service from twelve until two. Interment will take place at Moorhead Memorial Gardens. The family requests that memorials be addressed to Hospice of the Red River Valley www.hrrv.org
