Ivan Camrud

March 11, 1927 — March 4, 2016

Ivan Camrud was called to heaven on March 4th. He goes to join his parents Alma and Martin and his late son-in-law Gael Larr. Ivan was born March 11, 1927 in South Viking, Maddock N.D. He was baptized on April 15, 1927 at the South Viking Church and confirmed in July of 1941. He leaves behind his siblings; Marlys Hofstrand, Marion Bjornstad, Dorothy and Art Knudtson, James and Carole Camrud and Florence and Phil Knutson, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
His childhood was spent growing up on the farm and in 1939 the family moved to Larimore where he graduated from high school in 1945. Upon graduation he entered the US Army Air Corp, serving at Maxwell and Craig Fields in Alabama. He was honorably discharged in Nov. 1946. Ivan entered Concordia College and graduated in 1950. While at Concordia he participated in track and was named co-captain his senior year.
On June 17, 1950 he married Juanada Jo Paulsrud in Chicago. The marriage was blessed with three children, Mark and Marsha Camrud of Farmington NM, Jolinda and Tom Michels, and Ann Larr of Moorhead. In the fall of 1950 he accepted his first teaching position at Fergus Falls. In 1958 the family moved to Moorhead where he taught and coached at North Junior High. Ivan earned his Masters degree from Moorhead State in 1969 and in 1978 he was honored as Moorhead’s Teacher of the Year. He retired in 1988 after teaching and coaching for 37 years.
Ivan and Jo were also blessed with four grandchildren, Angie and Matt Christensen, Allison and Travis Smith, Scott Michels and Ednah Michels. The great grandkids had a special place in his heart and include Emma Cullen, Owen Cullen, Kya Smith and Kallie Smith.
Ivan was very involved with the community and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 58 years. He belonged to Concordia C-400, the American Legion, Sons of Norway, Retired Teachers, Boy Scouts, and Valley Vintage Car Club. He spent many hours volunteering at Trinity, Eventide, and community organizations like Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity. His hobbies include painting, playing cards, a cottage on Lake Ida, woodworking, tinkering in the garage, and watching grandchildren and great grandchildren involvement in sports and activities. The Vikings were his NFL team, the Broncos were his AFL team, and he was a lifelong Twins fan. A special highlight of Ivan’s life was an opportunity to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington DC in Oct. 2015.
We are celebrating his 89th birthday which would have been on March 11. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donation in his honor be made to Concordia College, Trinity Church, Eventide, or Honor Flight.
