James Mullen

James Jim F. Mullen, 93, Fargo, ND, formerly of Moorhead, MN, peacefully died on January 6, 2011 at the Villa Maria, surrounded by his family.James, beloved son of George and Sarah Mullen was born May 23, 1917 in Underwood, MN where he was raised, graduating from Underwood High School in 1935. After graduating he attended Interstate Business College, he went to work at the Moorhead Post Office in 1940. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 and was sent to Quonset Point, Rhode Island. In 1943, while stationed in Rhode Island he met and married Michele Gianfrancesco of Providence. He served most of his service time in Port Lyote, French Morocco. After being honorably discharged in 1945, James and Michele settled in Moorhead and lived there for 59 years. James worked at the Moorhead Post Office and retired as Superintendent of Mails with over 30 years of service. After retirement from the Post Office he worked with his good friend Vic Anderson of Anderson Realty as a Realtor. In 2004 James and Michele moved to the Waterford at Harwood Groves in Fargo, ND. James was an active member in the American Legion, life member of the VFW, Toastmasters Club, St. Joseph's Catholic Church and started the Moorhead Knights of Columbus, he was their first Grand Knight and was also inducted into the Minnesota State Hall of Fame of the Knights of Columbus at the 4th degree exemplification in St. Cloud, MN.James enjoyed life to the fullest, was an optimist, with a keen wit and very proud of his Irish/English heritage. He was dedicated to his church and his family. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his many friends and playing cards; he also loved dancing. He and Michele wintered in Scottsdale, Arizona for 22 years and in the summer enjoyed their cabin on Pickerel Lake, MN, where many family memories were made.He is survived by his wife, Michele and four children, Janet Paul Erickson, West Fargo, Dennis Mullen, Littleton, CO, Deborah Gerber, Mission Viejo, CA, and Paul Mullen of Mission Viejo, CA; his brother Vincent Mullen, Fergus Falls, MN; sister Margaret Leeman, Grand Rapids, MN; thirteen grandchildren, John, Julie, Jason and James Erickson; Brent Shelly, Jeff Lisa, and Lisa Mullen; Julianne Dan Tibbetts, Jenna Gerber, Ashley Patrick Lazuka; Michael and Matthew Mullen; eighteen great-grandchildren, Levi, Justas, Zakary Thene; Zoe, Laila, Leyton, and Knox Erickson; Addison, Braden, and Cameron Mullen; Riley, Aiden, and Emerson Mullen; Makayla Mullen; Anna and Claire Tibbitts; Macey and Noah Lazuka.He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Sarah, brothers Maynard and Floren, and sister Mildred Scully.In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the Alzheimer's Association and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
