Joyce Eileen Elmquist Eidbo

April 8, 1929 — August 9, 2010

Joyce Eileen Elmquist Eidbo joined the Church Triumphant on August 9, 2010, at 81 years of age. She was born on April 8, 1929, at Hickson, ND. Her father Carl "Chester" Elmquist was a commercial beekeeper while her mother Louise Oseid Elmquist taught school in Hickson. When Joyce was six years old her Mother passed away and shortly thereafter she and her father moved to Moorhead, MN, and lived with her grandparents.Joyce attended school in Moorhead and graduated with honors from High School in 1947. She then enrolled at Concordia College and graduated in 1951. After college graduation with majors in Art and English. She taught in Robbinsdale, MN, Clara Barton School in Fargo, ND, and at the North Dakota School of Independent Study in Fargo.In 1951, while teaching in Robbinsdale, Joyce married her college sweetheart Paul Eidbo in Minneapolis while Paul attended the annual convention of the then American Lutheran Church. They were married by one of their former college religious teachers, Rev. Sydney Rand. After returning to Moorhead, Joyce and Paul became charter members of The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.Throughout her life Joyce was immersed in art both as an artist and as an art teacher. While a seventh grade student at Park School in Moorhead, her painting was chosen to be shown at the Rockefeller Center in New York in the "Young America Paints" exhibition. She continued her painting and her work was on display in many local, regional, and national exhibits. In 1984 and 1986, she was awarded "FIRST PLACE – ACRYLIC" in the local Moorhead-Fargo Regional Art shows in the Civic Auditorium, and later won "Best of Show." Joyce continued her teaching career at the Clara Barton School in Fargo and after severalyears off while she raised her family, she continued teaching at the North Dakota Division of Independent Study on the NDSU Campus in Fargo for over 20 years. Also during this time she was a founding member of the retail artist store Gallery 4 in Fargo. Her much sought after paintings continued flowing from her own studio in Moorhead. Her education continued and she completed several post graduate art courses at MSU, NDSU and U of M, and a special art seminar in Mexico. In addition she visited many famous art museums throughout America, Europe, and Asia. Joyce also has enjoyed being a pen-pal with Mrs. Agnes Pierce, Liverpool, England, from her high school days until their last communication in June, 2010. One of Joyce's greatest enjoyments was her trips with her daughters to the annual Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Races.Joyce is survived by her husband Paul, Moorhead, MN, and six children; Carl Marilyn, Fargo, ND, Eric, Atlanta, GA, Louise Bennet Spielvogel, Austin, TX, Joel, Meadville, PA, Robert, Moorhead, MN, and Emily Jeffery Haynes, Austin, TX. Also 12 grandchildren; Ashley Eidbo, Coralville, IA, Alyssa Eidbo, Auburn, AL, Kelsey Eidbo Chico, CA, Evan Spielvogel, Austin, TX, Sarah Eidbo, Meadville, PA, Abigail Haynes, Austin, TX, Kelly Eidbo, Meadville, PA, Joshua Haynes, Austin, TX, Ezra Spielvogel, Austin, TX, Lauren Eidbo, Meadville, PA, Jadon Haynes, Austin, TX, and Matthew Eidbo, Meadville, PA.Joyce was preceded in death by her parents Carl "Chester" and Louise Elmquist, her grandparents, Charles and Mathilda Elmquist, and twin grandchildren, Amy and TimothyEidbo.Memorials in honor of Joyce should be given to those chosen by the donor.
