June Washburn

June Helen Deike Washburn, 92, Moorhead, MN, passed away on August 1, 2016 at Eventide Nursing Home. June was born January 24, 1924 in the Village of Oak Park, Chicago, Illinois, to Julia and Edward Deike. She was raised in Michigan and later moved back to Chicago, IL.

June received honorable and satisfactory service in World War II in the United States Marine Corps from March 8, 1944 through March 9, 1946 and held the rank of Private First Class.

She married George on November 3, 1950. They moved from Chicago, IL, to Moorhead in 1952 where they raised their two sons. During their 58 years of marriage George and June enjoyed camping with family and friends and traveling to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas for the winters.

June gave 49 years of volunteer service at the VA Medical Center in Fargo. She received a certificate for dedicated participation in the Voluntary Service program for 7, 622 hours. She also worked at the Tree Top and Skol Room in the FM Hotel and Rex Café, downtown Moorhead, and for several years in the lunch room for Moorhead Public Schools.

She was preceded in death by her husband George in 2009. June is survived by her two sons Russ Washburn, Dilworth, MN and Tom Jayne Washburn, Moorhead, MN, and one grandson Brian Washburn, Minneapolis, MN.

A special thanks to the staff of the Garden Square at the Fairmont, Eventide where June resided for the past 8 years.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2016, at 10:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.
