Louis Remark

April 9, 1921 — August 21, 2016

Dr. Louis Fred Remark, longtime Moorhead resident, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away Sunday, August 21, 2016 at Lilac Homes, Moorhead. He was 95 and under the care of Hospice.

Louie was born on April 9, 1921 at home in Ada, MN to Alfred and Clarice Pfund Remark. After graduating from Ada High School in 1939 he attended college a short time before joining the US Army. Louie served his country in WWII as a member of the medical division of the 3rd army spending most of the war in France. In 1946, Louie returned from the war and started pre-dental studies at Moorhead State Teachers College MSUM. While there he met the love of his life, Dorothy Matthey of Casselton, ND. They were married on July 17, 1948 and recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.

In 1951, Louie graduated from the University of Minnesota Dental School and opened a dental office in Pelican Rapids, MN. After 3 years he and Dorothy moved to Moorhead where he practiced dentistry another 34 years, retiring in 1988. He loved working with the other dentists, hygienists and staff at the office and also enjoyed talking to all of his patients while he carefully worked on their teeth.

Louie loved Moorhead and was a faithful supporter of the Moorhead Spuds, MSUM Dragons, and Concordia Cobbers. He received the MSUM Hall of Fame “Distinguished Service Award” in 1979. He was also active in the NW Dental Association, Moorhead Rotary Club, and the Moorhead Athletic Association. He was a long time usher at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and enjoyed being part of the Helping Hands Ministry. In retirement, Louie served Meals on Wheels and often volunteered at the F-M Food Pantry.

Louie’s kind heart and gentle spirit made him a wonderful husband, father, and grandpa. He faithfully attended his children’s and grandchildren’s many musical and athletic events from their elementary school years all the way through college. He enjoyed taking his family on camping trips to various National Parks, ski trips to Montana and Colorado and spent many happy years at the cabin on Bad Medicine Lake. Louie also loved to play golf, hunt, and fish with friends. Although Louie preferred being home or at the lake, in retirement he and Dorothy enjoyed several special trips together, especially to Hawaii, Europe, and golfing in Texas.

Louie was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert Remark, in-laws Delford Punk Johnson, Vern Stirling, Herb and Elnore Glaser and nephew and niece Paul and Barb Johnson.

Louie is survived by his wife Dorothy; their children, daughter Claudia Ted Johnson of Minnetonka, MN and their children TJ Sofie Johnson and Sarah Johnson; son Bob Deb Remark and their children Nicole Josh Swanson, Lisa Dustin Thorson and Rob Amber Remark; daughter Kim Mike Slette and their children Greg Katie Slette, Kristin Derrick Houdek, Erik Morgan Slette, and Anne Slette; daughter Jane Dave Sederquist and their children Tom Sederquist, Dan Savannah Sederquist and Ryan Christie Sederquist. Louie is also survived by 9 great grandchildren: Isak and Liv Johnson, Emma and Kate Swanson, Charli Thorson, Louis Remark, Logan and Addie Slette, and Lydia Houdek as well as his sister Betty Johnson, Moorhead and in-laws Marilyn Stirling, San Clemente, CA, Sharon Remark, Fertile, MN, Bernie and Jean Matthey, Prescott, AZ and numerous nieces and nephews.
