Richard “Dick” Steffen

Richard K. Steffen, 87, died April 5, 2010, at his home in Moorhead after a long illness. Dick had resided in Moorhead for more than 60 years. He was born in Pipestone, Minnesota, on June 20, 1922, grew up in Pipestone and graduated from high school there. Following high school Dick worked and attended business school in Minneapolis before joining the Navy in 1942. He was married to Vivian Satre in September of 1942. Dick and Vivian enjoyed 64 years of marriage before her death in 2006. Dick is survived by two sons, John K. Steffen Susan of Minneapolis and Paul R. Steffen Jeannette of Thousand Oaks, California; five grandchildren, Elizabeth David Scheler and Christine Steffen of Minneapolis, Michael Steffen Jessica of Carlsbad, CA, David Steffen of Thousand Oaks, CA, Sarah Steffen of San Diego, CA; and a great grandson, Jonathan Scheler of Minneapolis. Dick and his family moved to Moorhead in 1950 when Dick established an office equipment business under the name Steffen's Office Equipment. Dick was active in the local business community for more than 30 years and at one time was chair of the Moorhead Chamber of Commerce. He was also active in civic organizations including the Lions Club, and a term as chairman of the Minn-Kota Chapter of the American Red Cross. Dick and Vivian were long time members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead. Dick and Vivian maintained a home in Arizona for many years where they spent the winter months. They visited John and family at John and Susan's lake home near Park Rapids, MN, in the summer, and visited Paul and family in California for graduations, confirmations and other holidays. Dick was an avid golfer and played regularly into his late 70s in Arizona and at the Headwaters Country Club in Park Rapids, Minnesota. He and Vivian were members of Moorhead Country Club for many years.Memorials may be given to Eventide Lutheran Home, or to the donor's choice.
