Ruth Sorknes

Ruth B. Sorknes, 93, of Moorhead, MN, died Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Manor Care in Fargo.

Ruth B. Sorknes was born on January 25, 1922 to Halvor L. and Carine Jerde Sorknes in Madison, MN.

Ruth graduated from Madison High School in 1940 and attended the teacher training department for one year to prepare for teaching in rural schools. She then taught in district 72 in Swift County and in district 34 in Lac Qui Parle County.

She received an Associate of Arts degree from Moorhead State College in 1944 and then taught in the elementary schools in Barnesville, MN and El Monte, CA. In 1950 she received her Bachelor of Science degree from Moorhead State University.

In 1963 she earned a Master of Science degree from Bemidji State College. In 1949 she began teaching in Fargo, one year at Hawthorne and 36 years at Jefferson, retiring in 1986.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and six sisters, all of whom had been public school teachers at one time or another.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 7, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Madison, MN.

Memorials preferred to North Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch or the YWCA of Fargo.
