Victor Fergen

January 1, 1924 — September 16, 2016

Victor F. Fergen of Moorhead passed away on Friday, September 16 in the Palliative Care Unit of Sanford Hospital. He was 92.

Vic was born on January 1, 1924 to Joe and Marie Behrends Fergen in Parkston, SD. He was one of 12 siblings.

On July 4, 1950 Vic married Joyce Boettcher in Aberdeen, SD. Shortly after they moved to Fargo-Moorhead. They had five children and were married for 39 years.

Vic served in the Army in World War II and was stationed in Germany. He served on the Moorhead City Council for 10 years and was a long time member of St. Joseph’s Church.

In the late 1950’s he opened Vic’s Southside Superette just one block from the MSU later MSUM gates. That grocery store helped him learn just about every first name in south Moorhead. Vic owned and operated that store for over 25 years. While at the Superette he became closely involved with MSU students and faculty and became a member of the Old Order of Owls Fraternity. He still has his jacket.

After the grocery store, Vic was a parts manager and worked for Wagner Realty.

In October of 1983 he opened Vic’s Lounge in the Moorhead Center Mall. The friends and acquaintances he made at the lounge added to his friendly legacy. He retired in 1994.

Vic enjoyed the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings and MSUM athletics. He loved to socialize and over his lifetime owned three cabins on Lake Eunice.

Vic was a special man to many people. He had a beautiful smile and was the definition of the word “charisma.” Every pub and gathering place from Moorhead to the Lakes was brighter when Vic walked in. Everyone loved Vic Fergen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 of his 11 brothers and sisters. Vic is survived by his four sons, Doug, Moorhead, Scott Daniella, Detroit Lakes, Chris Mary Ann, Fort Collins, CO, Terry Haley, Bedford, TX, and one daughter, Connie Todd Menssen, Northfield, MN; eight grandchildren, Matt, Ryan, Joe, Cole, Lucy, Clara, Nick and Nina. Also one sister, Mary Jo Scholer, Ontario, CA.

The last 10 years of his life were spent sharing time with special person Joyce Wright, Moorhead.

The people at Sanford Hospital and the Sanford Palliative Care Unit helped make Vic’s life comfortable at the end. Thanks. Vic would say that the American Legion in Dilworth would be a good place for memorials.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 20 from 5 – 7 PM with a prayer service beginning at 6:30 in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead. A Celebration of Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 21 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery.
