Walt Lystrom

April 21, 1928 — January 10, 2010

Walter Louis was born April 21, 1928 to George and Clara Paul Lystrom in Ada, MN where he grew up and attended school. He joined the Navy in November, 1946 and served on the USS Valley Forge. When he was discharged in 1949, he returned to Crookston, MN and graduated high school. In 1950 he attended Mohler Barber College in Fargo, ND. He married Delores Gustafson on August 25, 1951 in Crookston, MN. They moved to Fisher, MN, where he owned and operated Walt's Barber Shop. Walter also owned barber shops in Ada, MN and Lake Park, MN. In 1970 he started Vend-Rite Company where he enjoyed meeting and visiting with people. On August 31, 1980 Walt was in a life changing car accident. His determination helped him regain his ability to walk again with crutches; something the Doctors told him he would never do. In April 1983 he participated in a Walk for the Lions Club, completing 4.1 miles. He thrived on things that people told him he could not do. Walt was an avid fisherman and hunter. Also, he loved his old cars, Westerns, and teasing his grandkids. Everyone enjoyed listening to his stories. He was a remarkable husband and father, saying "There's no such word as can't." He was fortunate to participate in the WWII Honor Flight to Washington DC in November, 2007.
