Arden K. Lange

November 1, 1938 — March 22, 2021

Arden K. Lange (82) passed peacefully in Fargo, North Dakota on March 22, 2021, surrounded by those who love her.  Arden was born on November 1, 1938 in Flushing New York, to Robert Emil Lange and Love Elizabeth Simmons Lange. She grew up in both Bayside and Port Jefferson, New York, and graduated from Endicott College in 1958 with a degree in Merchandising. Her lifelong Bayside friends include Tony and Serina Sarcona; Bob, Helen, Al and Doris Careno; and more recently, Richard Aidala. Arden’s friendship with Serina Sarcona was one of her most cherished relationships and will endure from this plane to the next.

Arden worked as an Assistant buyer in New York’s City Stores until 1964. She married Timothy Fogarty in 1959 and together they had daughters Christa, Alicia, and Alexandria. As a stay-at-home mom in the 60’s she bonded deeply with Julia Child and her show, The French Chef, and started her role as cook, chef, and all-around cuisine magic-maker. She worked that magic at In Good Taste in Millburn, New Jersey; Steven’s Tech Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity in Hoboken, New Jersey; and in Arden’s Pantry, a store she proudly ran with brother-in-law Jim Shaw in Fort Myers, Florida. Into her 60’s and 70’s, Arden continued to work and cook for the Smiley family of Mohonk Mountain House in upstate New York, which, in addition to Cottage Lange in Port Jefferson, was one of her most beloved places in the world. Arden moved to Fargo, North Dakota in 2014 to be close to her daughter and grandchildren.

In addition to her family and cooking, Arden loved creating a beautiful home and warm holiday traditions. For decades, she completed the NY Times Crossword puzzle every Sunday, in pen. She created needlepoint and knitting projects that many of us cherish. She followed the recent presidential election on CNN day and night, and proudly watched the first woman sworn in as Vice President with her grandchildren. She never owned a computer but preferred talking endlessly on the phone with her friends and family, and to write thoughtful letters.

Arden will be deeply missed by all who loved and adored her. She is preceded in death by her parents and step-mother Lilian Lange, her sister-in-law Susan Kelly, her niece Laura Kelly, great niece Annaleigh Arden Grillo, and great friend Anthony Mellor. She leaves behind (temporarily) her daughters Christa (Tom) Egan, Alicia Fogarty, and Alexandria Fogarty; her grandchildren Jack Ryan Egan, Catie Margaret Egan, Tea Alexandria Dashner, Glen Lachlan Fogarty, and Arden Violet Fogarty; her sister and brother-in-law, Francia and Jim Shaw; her step-sisters Gail G. Lawrence and Alicia Stewart; her brother-in-law Peter Kelly, her beloved nieces and nephews, Pamela Hawkesworth, Nancy O’Hara, Francia Ryan, Debi Grillo, Patricia Garcia, Tiffany Antista, Thomas Kelly, and Bruce Kelly. And finally, many great-nieces and nephews who got to know and love her.
