Catherine Ann Setter Hinz, 80, of El Paso, Texas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. Her devoted husband of 53 years, James Hinz, was by her side.

Cathy was born in Moorhead, Minnesota on July 20,1945 to Elvin and Armella (Rutten) Setter. She was the ninth child out of ten. She attended elementary school at St. Francis and graduated from Moorhead Senior High in 1963. Following high school she attended St. Gabriel's Hospital School of Nursing in Little Falls, Minnesota. Following graduation as a Registered Nurse she worked at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. Cathy later moved back to Moorhead and worked as an R.N. at St. Luke's Hospital Fargo, North Dakota. While in Moorhead she met her future husband, James Hinz. Jim was a Green Beret in the army and served in Vietnam.

Cathy had decided to expand her nursing experience. She moved to Panama along with her friend Coral Adema where they practiced nursing. While in Panama she reconnected with Jim Hinz, who was recovering at a military base there from wounds he had sustained in Vietnam. Following their marriage in 1972 they returned to the States.

Cathy was devoted to her many dogs throughout the years Her hobbies included rose gardening. She was so happy working with her roses which mirrored her mother's (Armella) love of producing the beautiful flowers. Cathy and Jim eventually moved to El Paso where Jim taught math to high school students. Cathy was quick to smile and loved to make jokes.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents Elvin and Armella Setter and her siblings Betty Fugere, Maxine Rutten, Dolores Marchand, Donald Setter, Leo James Setter, Thomas Setter and Gerald Setter. She is survived by her husband James Hinz and sisters Jean Danielson (Glyndon, MN) and Margaret (Peg) Setter-Abbott (Sedona, AZ). Also many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Catherine Setter Hinz and James W. Hinz at 11:00AM on Saturday, September 19th, 2026, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Moorhead, MN. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM prior to the service. Following the service there will be a luncheon followed by burial at St. Joseph's cemetery, Moorhead, MN.
