Darrel D. Charon

Darrel D. Charon, 69, Moorhead Health Care Center, Moorhead, MN, died on March 22, 2004, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.Darrel D. Charon was born on January 16, 1935, in Lawton, ND, to Joseph and Nellie Matejcek Charon. He grew up and attended rural school near Lawton, ND, and graduated from high school in Devils Lake, ND. He graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. Darrel married Sandra Orr on August 2, 1958, in Eagle Bend, MN. He taught school and coached football in Eagle Bend, MN, for five years and also taught in Bottineau, ND for two years. They moved to Moorhead, MN, in August of 1964, and he went to work for the Fargo Forum in Fargo. He worked as assistant manager in circulation and later moved to distribution until 1987, when he suffered a stroke and was forced to retire for health reasons. He moved to Moorhead Healthcare Center, where he has lived since.Darrel was a Golden Gloves boxer and boxed in Devils Lake and Wahpeton, ND, obtaining the upper Midwest flyweight champion title in Minneapolis, MN, and advancing to the nationals in Chicago, IL. He also played baseball at Concordia College and in Eagle Bend, MN. He loved the farm he was raised on near Lawton and also the lake, at Long Lake near Park Rapids, MN. Darrel loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of the Lake Agassiz Kiwanis Club and had served a term as Lt. Governor in Kiwanis. He also belonged to the Fargo Elks Club. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Moorhead, where he had served on the church council.Darrel is survived by his wife, Sandra, Mesa, AZ; two sons, Corey Charon, Eagan, MN, and Chad Charon, Fargo, ND; one daughter, Conni Al Hansen, Rapid City, SD; one sister, Charlotte Roger Burt, Lawton, ND; four grandsons; daughter-in-law Kris Charon, Chaska.
