David B. Skrei

April 12, 1946 — August 20, 2022

David Skrei passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at his home in Moorhead, MN.

David was born at St. Ansgar’s Hospital in Moorhead, MN, on April 12, 1946, to Obert and Evelyn (Paulson) Skrei, and grew up with his 9 siblings on the family farm just outside of Glyndon.

David was baptized at Concordia Lutheran Church, Glyndon and confirmed at Glyndon Lutheran Church.

David attended Gunderson School, rural Glyndon, and Glyndon Public School graduating in 1964, in which he participated in band, basketball, baseball, and played for the Dilworth American Legion baseball team. After graduation he attended Moorhead State University for a little while before working at Dakota Electric. He was drafted into the Army where he served with the 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles) from active 1968 – 1969, and standby reserves till Honorably discharged in 1973.

After the Army, David met LouAnn and on their first date he took her out in his Orange Plymouth Roadrunner, with her little brother Richard tagging along.

David and LouAnn (Morvig) were married on December 26, 1971 in a snowstorm. They began their married life in Jamestown before moving back to Moorhead to be closer to family in 1980. They enjoyed crafting decorative frames and plaques, ran the ‘Wood Shop’ and traveled to local craft shows throughout the 1980s. They spent summers surrounded by friends and his brother and sisters’ families camping around Minnesota, many at Long Lake Campground, and were happiest when entertaining with lots of people and family around, hosting holidays, family events and even a wedding. They took many trips together, including Colorado, Texas, California, Florida and Hawaii until LouAnn’s passing in 1993.

David worked for Qwest, formerly Northwest Bell & US West, from 1969 until his retirement after 40 years of service. After retirement he enjoyed the slower pace, working on projects around his yard, watching the birds and wildlife that visited, meeting up with his sisters regularly, many family gatherings, time spent with his friend Bonnie and meeting up with people to shoot the breeze, including his high school classmates and coworkers.

David is well known for his laidback manner, kindness, quick wit, smile, love of life and ‘Big’ bear hugs. He will be missed at family gatherings for his stories, card games and especially on Sundays for the Vikings football games and the family football pool. David was an avid supporter of Minnesota sports, especially Gophers, Twins and Vikings, and in recent years with his cat, Tiger, by his side.

David loved spending time with his grandkids, listening to their stories, supporting their dreams and ambitions, and was proud of their accomplishments. David especially enjoyed being able to there in person or via internet, having in-depth conversations with Brady on the back porch, watching Tiffany and Kaitlyn performing in Dance, and being there when Ethan earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

David is preceded in death by his parents, Obert and Evelyn Skrei; wife, LouAnn (Morvig) Skrei; brothers, Theodore Skrei, Paul Skrei, Robert ‘Michael’ Skrei, Richard & Ann Skrei; sisters, Barbara & Clarence Brown, Karen & Wiley Walker; in-laws, Obert & LaRayne Morvig; brother-in-law, Loren ‘Bergy’ Bergerson, football buddy Dick ‘Scully’ Sculthorp, and other family and friends who proceeded him on the heavenly journey.
