David Lee “Dave” May, 66, of Hawley, MN, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2025, in his home in Hawley.

Dave was born on October 2, 1959, to Calvin and Evelyn (Esler) May in Staples, MN. He grew up in the Motley area where he attended Motley High School. After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force serving his country for the next three years. After his discharge, he began his career as a carpenter, mainly building log cabins across the United States for nearly twenty years. He was united in marriage to Darlene Hanky on June 22, 1985, in Cushing, MN. He worked at a sawmill for a time before working at Manion’s Trust Company in Pillager, MN, for thirteen years. He later moved to Hawley, MN, to be closer to his grandkids where he has lived ever since.

Dave enjoyed watching westerns and collecting miniatures. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also liked to think that he was pretty good at drinking beer.

Dave is survived by his children, Jamie Zolen, Travis May, and Shawna May; grandchildren, David, Tytian, Ryan, Calvin, Liliana, Carter, Bonnie, Jessa, and Julia; great-grandchildren, Zander, Ivy, Alaina, Nakota, and one on the way; sister, Robin May; nieces and nephews, Scott Tufvander, Angela Tufvander, and Brenna (Cory) Schmitz; and many other loving relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Darlene; son, Jess Stewlow; parents, Calvin and Evelyn; siblings, Ardith Tufvander and Terry May; and nephew, Ken Tufvander.
