Dorothy Helen (Kuball) Smith

Dorothy Helen Smith, 97 years old, of West Fargo, ND (formerly of Galesburg, ND) went home to be with her Jesus on February 15, 2023. Dorothy was born on August 11, 1925 to parents Caroline (Berg) and Henry Kuball on her grandfather’s homestead near Wales, ND. She was baptized September 1925, at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Dresden, ND and was confirmed at the same church August, 1940. She attended grade school and junior high school at Minto Consolidated School near Wales, ND. Dorothy graduated high school in Langdon, ND in 1943. She attended Teacher’s College in Valley City, ND and received her teaching certificate there. Dorothy taught in rural schools near Cooperstown and Galesburg, ND.

 

On June 3, 1945 Dorothy married Victor Smith at Grace Lutheran Church in Grandin, ND. Dorothy met Victor at a “basket social” in Galesburg and he bid on her decorated picnic basket! Following their marriage, Dorothy became a member of Elm River Lutheran Church in Galesburg. She participated in teaching Sunday School, Lutheran Church Women and holding several offices on the church council. Dorothy also served on the Galesburg City Council, Galesburg school board and kept active in the community. She especially enjoyed the Homemaker’s Club.

 

Dorothy had many hobbies which included her numerous craft projects, sewing, painting and quilting. Dorothy loved to entertain and try new recipes! Victor and Dorothy enjoyed spending many winters in Mesa, Arizona. There, she enjoyed the pool exercises, Sunland Quilter’s Club, volunteering at the Lutheran Thrift Store and at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Dorothy and Victor enjoyed traveling to Terry’s home on the West Coast, Danae’s home on the East Coast and spending time at Alan’s lake home in MN. Their grandchildren and great grandchildren gave them great joy!!

 

Dorothy is survived by three children; Alan (Jennie) Smith, Punta Gorda, FL, Terry (LaVonne) Smith, Vancouver, WA, and Danae (Eric) Delman, Alexandria, VA. Eight grandchildren; Murray (Donna) Smith, Paula Smith Winter, Christopher (Ami) Smith, Aaron (Amber) Smith, Joshua (Sandra) Smith, Zachary Delman, Samuel (Carly) Delman, Erika (Jeff) Vliet. She is also survived by twenty-one great grandchildren; Jordan (Nicole) Smith, Tyler Smith, Samantha Smith, Kayla (James Eaves) Winter, Christine Winter, Chris (Meredith) Ingersoll, Derebe, Chernet, and Soren Smith, Violet, Levi, Maxwell, and Ciel Heidt, Mathias and Hans Smith, Victor and Imogen Smith, Amelia and Madelyn Delman, Vivian and Caroline Vliet. Dorothy has five great great grandchildren; Oliver Eaves, Henry, Josephine and Charlie Smith and Lena Winter. Sisters; Bette (Don) Flater, St. James, MN, Barbara Armstrong, Addie Oakland, Carol Alcorn of Denver, CO. Numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband; Victor, parents, brothers; Walter Kuball, Herbert Kuball, Irie Kuball, Alvin Kuball and Paul Kuball and sisters; Charlotte Gust, Mildred Brownsey. Grandson, Jason A. Smith.

A memorial service will be held August 12, 2023 at Elm River Lutheran Church, Galesburg, ND at 11 am, to celebrate the life of Dorothy.
