Obituary

lone Kathryn (Sannes) Johnson was born May 15, 1924, to Carl and Grace Sannes, in their farm home near Averill, MN.

Early childhood memories include herding cattle out on the prairie. At first she was on foot, and later her dad got her a Shetland pony. She was so small she would have to find a rock to stand on whenever the pony threw her off, which it liked to do.

lone was baptized at Scandia Church, attended grade school in Averill and graduated from high school in Glyndon.

In 1943, lone and a girlfriend went to a dance at the KC Hall in Fargo. lone noticed this handsome young man wearing brown slacks and a tan jacket and decided to ask him to dance. So Haaken and lone danced their first waltz of many to come.

They were married in 1944 and made their home for the next 54 years on their dairy farm North of Hawley, that Haaken's father and grandfather had also farmed.

lone was an active partner in the farming operation, kept an immaculate house, and was very proud of her beautiful yard and garden. She was an excellent seamstress and made many quilts and cross-stitch pictures.

lone and Haaken loved to dance and would drive many miles to a polka fest and made many good friends through dancing.

In 1998 they moved into Hawley. Haaken passed away in 2002. In 2018 she moved to the Viking Manor in Ulen, MN.

lone passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Viking Manor, surrounded by love and cherished memories. A service to remember and celebrate her life will be held at Lysne Lutheran Church, rural Hawley, on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to services.

She is survived by her brother Donald (Vi) Sannes of Moorhead, her daughter Eileen (James) Anderson of Hawley, her son Terry (JoAnn) , Rice Lake, WI, her grandchildren (Matthew (Patty) Johnson, Jason (Alicia) Johnson, Lori Johnson, Preston Johnson, Eric (Toby) Anderson, Allison Johnson, 11 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, her son Brian, her daughter-in-law, Eileen, sister Caroline, and brother Gordon.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the Viking Manor for the exceptional care and compassion they provided to lone and her family.
