John was born July 16, 1923 at Rollag, MN, to Joseph and Ida Arntson Bergseid. He grew up and attended country school and was baptized and confirmed in Rollag Lutheran Church. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1943. As part of the 5th Amtrac Battalion Company C, he fought in the battles of Tinian, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He was wounded in Iwo Jima and was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to farm in the Rollag area. He served as a game warden in northern Minnesota until his father's death, when he returned to Rollag to farm with his twin brother, Engel. He served on the Clay County ASCS Committee for several years and was a state performance supervisor for the Department of Agriculture. John married Elva Anderson on September 5, 1958, at Rollag. He is survived by his wife, Elva Bergseid of Rollag, MN; daughter, Julie James Rick of Waimea, HI; sons, Lowell Brenda Bergseid of Kirkland, WA, and John Christian Bergseid of Rollag, MN;granddaughter, Dorie Rothberg, and grandson, Eric Rothberg; sisters, Esther Kronbeck of Fargo, ND, and Alice Vincent Floberg of Pelican Rapids, MN; brothers, Tosten Angie Bergseid of Rollag, MN, George Vaughn Bergseid of Moorhead, MN, and Sam Caroline Bergseid of Des Moines, IA; brother-in-law, Kleve Lorilee Anderson; sisters-in-law, Meta Lahren, Marion Bergseid, Marianne Bergseid, Norma Bergseid; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Engel, Edward and Joseph; and brothers-in-law, Alvie Kronbeck and Don Lahren.
