John A. Schmitt

John Anthony Schmitt, 67, of Pelican Rapids, formerly of Dilworth, MN, passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Detroit Lakes, MN. John was born May 24, 1956, in Moorhead, MN, to William and Theresa (Nicolai) Schmitt. He grew up in Dilworth and graduated from Dilworth High School in 1975. Following high school, John began his career with BNSF Railroad. In 1982, he married Cindy Thompson and together they made their home in Dilworth.  John enjoyed his 28 years with BNSF until retiring. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening whenever he had the chance.

John is survived by his wife, Cindy; sons, Paul (Sheena), Mike (Maia); granddaughters, Madison and Tatum; siblings, Jim (Lynette), Kathy Anstadt, Jeannie (Dean) Lamb, and Mark; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Theresa; brother, Thomas; and nieces Caitlin and Angie.

Visitation will be Friday, October 13, from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 10:30 a.m., at Wright Funeral Home, Hawley, MN.
