Katherine J. “Kathy” Meland

Katherine Jo (Kathy) Meland of Fargo, ND, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2023, in her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Kathy was born in Fargo, ND, on December 22, 1953, to D. Arthur and Lois Novacek. She attended school in Moorhead, MN graduating from Moorhead High School in 1971. She was united in marriage to Steven Meland in 1973 and together they raised two children, Melissa, and Brian.

Caregiving and serving others were callings Kathy took seriously. After her children left home, Kathy was employed in a management position at the Cooperative Living Center in West Fargo where she welcomed new residents and coordinated many senior activities for new and long-term residents. She is remembered as a person who went above and beyond in her duties including preparation of such events as the honoring of Veterans, making holidays special for all residents, encouraging residents to garden in the Spring, and supporting residents during the good and tough times of their lives.

Kathy’s siblings, Steve, Jerry, Keith, Kenneth, and Lisa were always an integral part of Kathy’s life and provided much comfort and support during her extended illness.

Kathy is survived by her husband Steven; children Melissa (Terrill) Blair, and Brian (Marit) Meland; siblings Steve (Mary) Novacek, Jerry (Lois) Novacek, Keith Novacek, Ken (Marcy) Novacek, and Lisa Wagner; nieces and nephews, Tina Novacek, Elizabeth Novacek, Dan (Hope) Novacek, Dustin Novacek, Jordan Novacek, Jeremy Bensen, Shawn Novacek, Brittany (Drew) Nungesser, Christopher Wagner, Zachary Wagner, and Benjamin Wagner; as well as her beloved dog, Jake.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Tracey Novacek.

A visitation will be held on Monday, February 13, 2023, at 6:00 PM, with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM at Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Hope Lutheran Church (South Campus), Fargo, ND.
