Obituary

Lowell Charles Bolger, 90, passed away peacefully on July 8th, 2026, at his home in Moorhead, MN.

Born on February 15th, 1936, to Joseph and Anna Bolger, Lowell graduated from Moorhead High School and continued his education at Moorhead State Teacher’s College. After graduation he began a distinguished career as an educator and coach. One specific accomplishment he was proud of was creating the Developmental Adaptive Physical Education program for Moorhead Schools. He retired after 34 years in education and moved on to his 2nd career working in the crop insurance field.

Lowell was a loving family man. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Priscilla. His children Jeff (Kathy) Bolger, Kim (Don) Nelson, his five grandsons who were the absolute light of his life: Jordan (Hannah) Bolger, Austin (Carly) Nelson, Ben Nelson, Max (Annika) Bolger and Sammy Bolger. He was lucky enough to meet and know his 2 great-grandsons Leo Bolger and Booker Nelson. He was happy to know there is a 3rd great-grandson arriving in September.

Lowell lived his best life and loved every bit of it. He was quick-witted right up to the end. He could make people laugh with a perfectly timed comment. Lowell lived a successful life - with a long list of accomplishments including: in his first year coaching in 1959, bringing Hawley to their first ever boy’s basketball state tournament appearance, being inducted into several Hall of Fames: North Dakota Fastpitch Softball, Moorhead State Men’s Basketball, Moorhead Spud Hall of Honor, and American Legion Baseball. He was also a distinguished honoree for the Minnesota state Special Olympics.

The successes he was most proud of, however, were his family and friends. He loved people; he knew how to build friendships and how to keep them. He was one-in-a-million!

Lowell and family spent 26 years at the family lake home on Bad Medicine Lake. So many cherished memories were made with the entire extended family. Lowell loved spending time there and made it memorable for all. Bad Medicine Lake brought him great joy.

A celebration of Lowell’s life and legacy will be held on Thursday, July 16th, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Moorhead. Visitation will take place from 9:30-11:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Please stay for lunch afterwards.

Lowell was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Anna Bolger, sister Pat Hieb, brothers Thomas, Jerry and Eugene Bolger, and his youngest son Joe Bolger.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family kindly asks that donations be made in his honor to MSUM-Moorhead Men’s and Women’s Basketball program, organizations that were near and dear to his heart.
