Margaret B. Harkness

Margaret Bernice Harkness, 94, Moorhead, MN, passed away March 28, 2022, at home under care of family and Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Born August 6, 1927, at St. Ansgar’s Hospital in Moorhead, MN, Margaret was the first member of the family of Gilbert Bekkerus and Selina (Helseth) to be born in a hospital. She grew up on the family farm north of Glyndon, MN and graduated from Glyndon High School in 1945.  On September 27, 1952, she was united in marriage to John Harkness at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead.  Their wedding was the very first service ever held in the new church, after the former building was destroyed by fire.  Margaret worked briefly outside the home, but she devoted her life to caring for her family.  She was a skilled seamstress and she also enjoyed playing golf and various arts and crafts.  Margaret will be remembered for her generous heart and her quick wit that she maintained until the very end.

Margaret is survived by her children, Carla (Stuart) Hilleboe, Bruce (Donna McCammon) Harkness and Clay (Liz Frey) Harkness; grandchildren, Ben (Hannah) Hilleboe, Cody HIlleboe and Julia Harkness, and great-grandchildren, Bodhi HIlleboe, Etta Hilleboe and Callahan Hilleboe.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her 3 brothers and 3 sisters, and her husband, John.

Visitation will be Monday, April 4, 2022, from 5:00 to 6:00 P.M., with a prayer service at 6:00 P.M. at Wright Funeral Home in Moorhead. The prayer service will be livestreamed on Margaret’s webpage at www.wrightfuneral.com.
