Matthew R. Cahill

Matthew Rock Cahill, 58, passed away on Monday, May 10, 2021 in Coos Bay, Oregon, following a brief bout with cancer. Matt was born May 3, 1963 in Moorhead, to James and Helen (Stoltman) Cahill, the “baby” of the family of nine children. Matt grew up in Moorhead, attending St. Joseph’s school through eighth grade, and graduating from Moorhead High School in 1981. Matt’s education beyond high school continued throughout most of his adult life, and included degrees from Southwestern Oregon Community College and Summa Cum Laude from Western Oregon University. Although Matt had many jobs and “mini careers,” he was more comfortable as a free spirited, life-long learner and thinker.

Matt used his creative skills and ingenuity to master the art of the nomadic lifestyle, favoring relationships with those he met over material possessions or striving for monetary gain. He lived many different places, but primarily in Kansas and Oregon during his later years.

Matt was very creative and artistic. He had a particular passion for pottery and woodworking. He was an avid reader. Matt had a dry sense of humor, and loved to laugh about past experiences and his adventurous lifestyle. He had a very kind heart and will be missed by his family and all those he developed relationships with over the years.

Matt is survived by his brothers Steven (Jeri), David (Michele), Brian, Robert (Mary), Barton, and sisters Mary Frances (Doug) Johnson, Kathleen (Chappy) Graham, and Martha Rocheford, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents James and Helen Cahill.

Funeral Mass will be Thursday, June 3, 2021 at 11:00AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Moorhead. Visitation one hour before the funeral, at the church.
