Sandra Kay Schreiner, 83, passed away at her home, surrounded by her children on June 19, 2024, in Mt. Zion, IL.
Sandra was born on April 29, 1941, at St. Ansgar Hospital, Moorhead, MN, the daughter of Archie and Hazel (Qualley) Askegaard. She attended elementary and junior high school in Comstock, and graduated from Barnesville High School, in 1959. She then attended St. Ansgar Hospital of Radiologic Technology graduating in 1961. She worked as a technologist for St. Ansgar Hospital, Moorhead, Fargo Clinic/St. Luke’s Hospital, Fargo ND and at St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur, IL. She married Thomas Schreiner on September 2, 1961, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Dilworth, MN. They began their life together in Moorhead, MN. During this time, they celebrated the birth of four children: Darrin (Lori) Schreiner, Kimberly Schreiner, Shelly Carey, and Dean (Tena) Schreiner. In 1973, Tom received a promotion from Sears and the family moved to Decatur, IL, where she spent the rest of her life.
Sandra loved to travel and made several trips to Europe. She loved spending her winters in Panama City Beach, FL and coming to Minnesota in the summer. She was a season ticket holder of the Minnesota Vikings and loved cheering for them during the football season. Sandra was a classy and kind hearted individual who brightened every room she entered. She was known for her generosity, kindness, and compassion. She adored her children, seven grandchildren: Mary (Kyle), Megan (Jacob), Nicholas, Chase, Madison, Grant, and Kate, and her two great-grandchildren: Oliver and Isla. She was known as Grandma Sparkles or Glamma, and she loved them all to the moon and back. Sandra had a sweet tooth and enjoyed indulging in sweets. Dessert was always the best part of the meal. Sandra was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Mt. Zion.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tom and her parents: Archie and Hazel.
Services to honor Sandra’s life will be in both Mt Zion, Illinois and Moorhead, MN. The service in Mt Zion will begin with a visitation from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at Calvert & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mt. Zion, IL. A Vigil Prayer service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the end of the visitation. In Moorhead, MN a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 28th, with a visitation one hour before the service at St. Joseph's Catholic Church Moorhead, MN with interment being planned in St. Joseph's Cemetery to follow. A livestream of the mass will be available here on Sandra's webpage. Memorials may be made in Sandra’s Memory to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Sandra will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but her memory and the love she shared will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched.
