Selma Hermanson

November 7, 1911 — January 12, 2015

Selma Hermanson, 103, of Fargo, ND, died Monday, January 12, 2015 at Manor Care in Fargo.

Selma was born to Norwegian immigrants Andrew and Anna Stephenson on November 7, 1911, near Robinson, Kidder County, ND. She was a prairie child, second in the family, raised on her parents’ homestead in a house ordered from the Sears and Roebuck Catalog. Her older sister was born in a small wooden house that eventually became the chicken coop. Selma outlived her four sisters and three brothers: Agnes, Helen, Borghilde, Berneice, Morris, Albert, and Arthur.

Selma frequently visited relatives in Halstad, MN, and it was there she met Lloyd Hermanson. They were married in 1933, and had one daughter, Antoinette Toni. The family farmed in Traill County, ND until Toni graduated from high school, when they sold the farm and bought the Mule Lake Store near Longville, MN. After five years of long hours selling bait, gas, and groceries, Lloyd’s health problems led to the sale of the store and moving to Moorhead.

Selma lived in Moorhead for 45 years and belonged to a Homemaker’s group that became lifelong friends. Remaining members Arlys, Vi and Gwen have many Selma stories and say she livened up the group. Selma volunteered for many years at Eventide Nursing Home when Lloyd was a resident there. Selma and Lloyd celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before Lloyd’s death in 1984.

She is survived by her daughter, Toni Ness, granddaughters Tammy Don Hagen, Sandy Chuck Fitzer, and Sally Alan Buchanan, and grandson Tim Ness, great-granddaughter Christine Fitzer, great-grandsons Matt Fitzer, Tom Fitzer, Kyle Buchanan, and Tyler Hagen, many nieces and nephews, and numerous people who loved and care for her. Special thanks to the staff at Compassion Care and the manager Brandon at Parkview Terrace.

She saw so much history in her long life and was proud to have voted in every election since 1940. Everyone who knew her always received a smile and some “Tulle”, Norwegian for “foolishness.”
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead. Friends and family may gather for 1 hour before the service.
