Shirley A. Haugen

Shirley Ann (Somdahl) Haugen, age 86, passed away peacefully with family by her side at Oak Crossing, Detroit Lakes, MN, on February 15, 2024.

Shirley was born July 7, 1937, to Ruth (Jenson) and Russell Somdahl of Ulen, MN.  She graduated from Ulen High School in 1955.  She married Wesley Haugen, her high school sweetheart, on September 11, 1955, and joined Wes in Rhode Island where he was stationed in the U.S. Navy.  While living there they welcomed Sherri Lynn, a daughter, born July 13, 1956, at the Navy Base Hospital, and six years later a son, Scott was born July 13, 1962, in Detroit Lakes Hospital.

Shirley started her sales career working for local Buchette’s clothing store.  She began her long-term employment at Norby’s in Detroit Lakes and was instrumental in buying the latest women’s fashions for the sportswear department for many years.  Her customers were pleased with her creative selections as well as her bubbly personality, kindness, and genuine caring.  She was loved by so many!  In later years she also worked at the Central Market store.  

Shirley’s golden years were shared with her beloved companion, Jack Haugen, traveling and visiting family and friends along the way.  They spent many winters in Mesa, AZ enjoying the sun.  

Shirley joins her loving husband, Wes, family, and many dear friends.

She is survived by brother Barrett (Juli) Somdahl, of Branson, MO; her daughter, Sherri Ullrich, of Frazee, MN and her son, Scott Haugen; grandchildren, Corri Lynn, Tyler, Carrie, Joshua, Cassidy and Taylor and much-loved nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.  

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 2:00 PM with a visitation starting one hour before the service at Wright Funeral Home, Hawley, MN.

Final resting place will be in Lake Park Lutheran Cemetery, Lake Park, MN.
