Alton Eugene Butler

Alton Eugene Butler, 94, of Moorhead, MN, passed away on February 5, 2018, at Eventide Nursing Home in Moorhead.

Alton was born May 29, 1923 near Snowflake, Manitoba, to True McKinley and Marguretta (Medinger) Butler.  He grew up at East Grand Forks, MN, on the family farm.  Alton was married to LaVonne Irons on June 11, 1954 in Sisseton, SD, and they were together for 63 years.  They farmed near Felton, MN for 7 years and then moved to Hitterdal, MN where they continued farming for 45 years.  Alton grew flax, wheat and soybeans and later, with his son, Alan, he raised registered beef cattle and registered DUROC and HAMPSHIRE hogs.  Alton worked at the Moorhead Crystal Sugar Beet Company for many years while farming at the same time.

Alton was on the Ulen-Hitterdal School Board and was actively involved in the county watershed board. He was a lifetime member of Salem Lutheran Church in Hitterdal and served on the board of the church.  He also served on Atlanta Township town board for many years.  Alton enjoyed duck hunting and fishing.  He especially looked forward to staying at their cabin on Cotton Lake. Alton was happiest when his kids and grandkids were with him at the cabin.  He dearly loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alton is survived by his wife, LaVonne, Moorhead; son, Alan (Patricia) Butler, Rochert, MN; daughters, Melanie (Scott) Grabill, Bagley, MN, Jane Butler, Rochert, MN, and Kimberly (Greg) Peterson, HItterdal, MN; brother, True McKinley (Rosalie) Butler Jr., Spring Valley, CA; sister, Esther Dureth Schultz, Henderson, NV; grandchildren, Shane, Jeremy, Aaron, Alex, Leah, Tarah, Camille, Kari, Brandon, Pamela, Parker and Corbet and  4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Edna; his brother, Howard Laurel Butler, and his son, Brian Ross Butler.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M., followed by the Funeral Service at 2:00 P.M., at Salem Lutheran Church, Hitterdal, MN. Interment will be at Salem East Cemetery.
