Avis B. Cook

Avis Brandser Cook, age 99, of Hawley, MN passed away on August 7, 2016 at Sunnyside Care Center in Lake Park, MN.

She was born on February 3, 1917, the youngest of six children to Christian and Marie Orstad Brandser. She attended school in Hawley and after graduation she worked as a Dental Technician for Dr. Gottenborg in Detroit Lakes, MN and for the telephone company in Hawley, Brainerd, Grand Forks, and Detroit Lakes.

She was united in marriage to Willian Bill Cook at her parent’s home on June 15, 1947. He was an auditor for Swift & Co. and for the first three years of their marriage they traveled for his job throughout the Midwest and Canada. They then lived in Detroit Lakes for four years before moving to Hawley, where Bill bought the hardware store. She worked there for a time also.

Avis was a member of the Hawley United Methodist Church, Ladies Auxiliary and a past member of the Rebekah’s.

Avis was a wonderful homemaker, beloved mother, aunt and friend. She had a kind and beautiful soual.

She is survived by her three daughters, Kathy, Barb, and Kris Bryan Wilner, and many nieces, great nieces, and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her sister Alice and her four brothers and their wives, Owen Gen, Clemard Claribel, Gordon Joyce, and Russell Mary Brandser, and nephews Gordon Jr. and Jim Brandser.

Avis’ family wishes to thank the staff at Sunnyside Care Center for their support and outstanding care of her in her last years. And also to Hospice of the Red River Valley for their support.

Per Avis’ wishes, no funeral is planned. A family gathering will be held at a later date.

Any memorials may be sent to the Hawley United Methodist Church, Sunnyside Care Center or Hospice of the Red River Valley.
