Charles “Charlie” Williams

Charles “Charlie” Williams, 74, of Augusta, Georgia passed away on July 8, 2020, in Vibra Hospital of Fargo.

Charlie was born in Augusta, Georgia, to Thomas and Nancy Williams on May 7, 1946. He attended Lucy C. Laney High School, were he was a part of the proud class of 1965. After graduating from Laney High School, Charlie Williams enrolled at Willmar (MN) Community College and starred in basketball and track. In 1970, he transferred to Moorhead State College and made an instant impact in basketball. In a remarkable junior season, Charlie helped the Dragons gain national recognition, finishing 24-2 and claiming the Northern Intercollegiate Conference title, advancing to post-season play, and finishing fourth on the NAIA national poll. During his senior season, the Dragons finished 19-7, and Williams was named to the All-NIC team for the second straight year. He was also saluted as an NAIA Honorable Mention All-America during his sparkling career with the Dragons. After his playing career expired, he served as a student assistant basketball coach and was a fixture at third base for the Condors 1977 North Dakota State Softball Championship team. Charlie Williams was elected to the Dragon Hall of Fame in 2013 and his championship basketball team was inducted as well. He retired from Xcel Energy Company.

Charlie is preceded in death by both parents, Mr. Thomas and Nancy Williams; two brothers, Frank Williams and Thomas Williams, Jr.; two sisters, Doris Brooks and Eleanor Bolton; and two brother in-laws, Rayford Brooks and Leroy Davis.

Charlie is survived by siblings, Marion (WillieMae) Williams, Rena Davis, Melvin (Sylvia) Williams Sr., Robert (Annie) Williams, and Alberta Williams (sister-in-law). Charlie leaves to mourn dear loving family friends, Ms. Dawn Groslie; his dear God-son, Cy Groslie; and Ms. Karen Kasnet. He is also mourned by a host of nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.

A tribute in remembrance of Charlie will be held at MSUM to be announced at a later date during basketball season.
