Dale V. Skallerud

Dale Skallerud, 72, died August 5, 2016 in his home in Hawley. Dale was born in Madison, MN on September 24, 1943 to Milton and Helen Skallerud.

Dale graduated from Madison High School in 1961 and attended Moorhead State University graduating in 1965 with a degree in Elementary Education. He earned a Master’s Degree in 1971 and a Specialist Degree in 1978.

Dale taught 6th grade at Thomas Edison Elementary School in Moorhead for eight years during which time he spent one year teaching under the Fulbright Interchange Program in Ringwood, England.

Dale served as Elementary Principal in Hawley from 1973-1993. He also served as Hawley’s Athletic Director from 1978-1995. He became Superintendent of Schools from 1993-2000.

Highlights of Dale’s involvement in education was the passage of excess levy in 1993 and the construction of the new school from 1997-1999.

Dale married Yvonne Haug on September 1, 1963. Yvonne died of a relatively short fight with cancer on April 11, 1977.
Dale married Mary Sorum on November 24, 1978. Dale and Mary are the parents of two sons, Sean and Patrick.

Dale was an active member of his principal’s organization, Hawley Lions, Hawley Area United Fund, and Hawley Lutheran Church.

Dale worked as a football and basketball official during his college and teaching days. He served as secretary for Region 6A Minnesota State High School League from 1993-2016. His involvement for the MSHSL began in 7th grade as a participant in 1955 and continued until his death. He was inducted into the MSHSL Hall of Fame in 2003.

Dale’s interests were athletic activities, golf, and photography. During his time as Principal and Athletic Director, Dale made more than 35, 000 photographs in his basement darkroom.

Dale was an avid golfer and greatly enjoyed the game of golf with his golf cronies and sons. Highlights of a lifetime of golf included three holes in one, two double eagles, and one round of five under, 66.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, and his brother Lee.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons, Sean and Patrick; his brother Dean and wife Jan; and sister-in-law, Sandra Skallerud.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hospice, Roger Maris Cancer Center, Hawley Lutheran Church or the charity of your choice.

Memorial gathering will be Thursday, from 5 – 7 p.m., with prayer service at 7 p.m., in Hawley Lutheran Church, Hawley, MN.
Memorial service will be Friday, at 11 a.m., in Hawley Lutheran Chuch, Hawley, MN.
