Mona L. Smith

Mona’s journey came to an end October 1st at 8:45 a.m. She passed away in her sleep at Traverse Care Center, Wheaton, MN. Mona was born in Herington, KS, on December 27, 1949. She graduated from North High School, Fargo, ND, on June 1, 1967. She graduated from American Trichology Institute in Phoenix, AZ, on December 14, 1975. Mona attended Moorhead State University for a period of time and was awarded a cash prize for a new center writing contest. She graduated from Washburn University in Topeka, KS, with a B.A. in English Writing with Summa Cum Laude Honors in 1994. Mona was elected to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in recognition of outstanding merit and accomplishment as a student at Washburn University 1994-1995. Mona became an ordained minister October 19, 1989. She wrote stories and submitted them for publication in the “Wine Press” for First Assembly of God, Fargo, ND.

Mona enjoyed cooking, reading, crocheting, swimming, painting, calligraphy, photography, attending writing clubs, and arts and crafts of all kinds with her grandchildren. Mona loved playing games especially cards. Mona was witty and humorous and could banter with the best of them.

There are numerous lives that have been touched along Mona’s journey. She will be missed. As one very special person said, “She truly was a caretaker of all.”
Mona is survived by her children, Chelsea Smith of Moorhead, MN, Richard Smith of West Covina, CA; nine grandchildren, Caitlin Hatchard, Jace Hatchard, Jamie Hatchard, Cody Hatchard, Calli-Jo Reyes, Austin Smith, Alexis Smith, Jessa Graham, Macie Graham and one great-grandchild, Lilia-Rain Acevedo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emanuel George Hessler and Betty Ann Milner; step-father, Forrest DeVault; and daughter, Sara Larain Graham.

Visitation: Wednesday, October 7, from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.

Funeral: Wednesday, October 7, at 10:30 a.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.

Interment: Prairie Home Cemetery, Moorhead, MN.
