John was born March 30, 1936, in Barnesville, MN, to John Sr. and Alma (Nelson) Young. He grew up in Rollag, MN, and attended District 3 country school before moving to Hawley and graduating in 1954. John continued his education at NDSU and worked at T.F. Powers where he received his apprenticeship in masonry. On May 4, 1956, he married Betty Thompson. John served in the U.S. Army from 1958 – 1960. When he returned, they made their home in Rollag for a time before moving to Hawley in the early 1970's. Among the many recognitions John received, he was proud to be named Ambassador for the League of MN Cities, where he was rewarded the C.C. Ludwig Leadership Award. John loved supporting Hawley Athletics and spent 40 years on the "Chain Gang" during the football season. But above all, John loved his time with his family. He will be dearly missed.
